Luis Zimmermann’s works emerge through a multilayered process that combines transfer prints on screen-printed gauze with painting, as well as personal and found photographs. These translucent image elements are layered to create atmospherically dense and visually complex compositions.
The textile support references the tradition of canvas in painting but is expanded by a narrow frame edged with fabric. The permeability of the material allows the underlying image layers to remain visible, enhancing the spatial depth of the surface and intensifying the notion of layering and visual overlap.
Targeted cuts and openings integrate printed textile fragments directly into the picture plane. Referencing the strategy of the shaped canvas, these interventions break the conventional rectangular format and open the image both formally and conceptually. The cuts expose deeper image strata and establish new, collage-like visual connections. Lines, surfaces, fragments of bodies, and traces of color traverse the work without adhering to a fixed narrative.
Each layer retains its own internal structure while intersecting and interacting with others. This interplay generates a visual dynamic shaped by moments of disruption and surprise. The works resist clear interpretation, instead offering an open, associative space in which the interplay of material, motif, and surface invites ongoing dialogue between image and viewer.
